An Overview of the College of Foreign Languages

The College of Foreign Languages (CFL) of North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) was founded in 2011, formerly the Department of Foreign Languages in 2001, originating from the English Teaching and Research Section set up in 1986. It consists of two departments: English and Japanese, three College English teaching and research sections, one language study center and one self-access center for foreign languages. It has two undergraduate majors, English and Japanese. The College of Foreign Languages provides courses for English and Japanese majors at the College. It also offers courses of English, Japanese, Russian, French and Latvian to all the undergraduates and postgraduates of other majors at the institute.

There are 69 faculty and staff members in the college, including 10 professors and 30 associate professors. 63 of the faculty have received master’s degrees, of whom are 5 with doctoral degrees and many with educational background abroad. In addition, 7 foreign teachers are employed annually joining the teaching and research of the College.

The past few years have witnessed remarkable achievements of the College in the construction of its specialty, curriculum reform, faculty training and academic research. The College has developed 3 provincial-level and 4 school-level excellent courses. English language major has been listed as a school-level key subject and one of the pilot programs for school comprehensive reform. The College English teaching and research group has been honored as school-level teaching team. 17 teachers have won prizes in both provincial and school level teaching contests. It is particularly noteworthy that in the last 4 years alone, the faculty have undertaken over 72 research projects, of which there are 10 provincial ones. The College published 14 textbooks and reference books, and more than 70 academic papers. A number of academic researches have been awarded, including 1 provincial Teaching Achievement Award and 5 provincial-level Excellent Educational and Scientific Research Awards.

There are excellent teaching conditions in the college. It has one key language lab. Taking full advantage of modern educational information technology, the college has established a foreign language audio transmitter, a network language laboratory, a digital language laboratory, a simultaneous interpretation laboratory, a recording and broadcasting language laboratory, and a recording studio, a foreign language teaching network platform, a foreign language teaching resource platform, an independent learning platform and other facilities equipped with advanced computer-assisted translation software, forming a digital, three-dimensional foreign language learning software and hardware environment, firmly supporting the teaching of audiovisual courses in various languages as well as the teaching of translation and interpretation.

 The CFL lays much stress on the diverse extracurricular activities of students and such activities as the foreign language & culture festival, Western culture series lectures, speech contests and academic works competition are organized annually, which not only fosters a favorable environment for language learning, but also provides a stage for students to present themselves with a sense of fulfillment.

With solid professional knowledge, strong adaptability, a high sense of social responsibility and great team spirit, the graduates of the College enjoy a high employment rate of over 96% and are approved greatly by employers. Some of the graduates have been admitted by famous universities at home and abroad such as Beijing University, Shanghai International Studies University, Durham University, University of Georgia and HEC Paris for further education.

Facing the new era of great development of China’s emergency management, the college will continue to uphold its motto of "To Be, To See, To Do, To Enjoy", gather strength, forge ahead, and strive to build a college of international languages for emergency management with distinctive foreign language majors and differentiated talent cultivation. The college will build first-class foreign language majors, cultivates first-class foreign language talents, and comprehensively assists the coordinated economic development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the modernization of China’s emergency management.
